Again: “Pride” is Nothing to Celebrate

(This is a re-post of my "Pride" column from last year (2023).)

In his seminal work Mere Christianity, the great Christian apologist C.S. Lewis describes “pride” as “the Great Sin,” “the essential vice,” “the utmost evil.” Lewis concludes,

Unchastity, anger, greed, drunkenness, and all that, are mere flea bites in comparison; it was through Pride that the devil became the devil; Pride leads to every other vice; it is the complete anti-God state of mind.

Thus, I suppose it is rather fitting that the “official” celebration of the evil LGBT agenda is called “Pride Month.” Few things today more encompass the wretched display of pride than what is exhibited when those under the throes of the LGBT agenda are unashamedly and boldly “out of the closet.”

Why was it—as this is typically no longer the case—that those with homosexual attractions had to come “out of the closet?” It was because to act on those attractions was often illegal, and—or at least—typically frowned upon by society at large. Why was homosexual behavior so stigmatized? Because it was once largely (and rightly) viewed as “unnatural” and immoral.

It is important to note that things are not—or should not be—immoral because they are illegal, they are—or should be—illegal because they are immoral. And this is not to say that all immoral things should be illegal. The biggest achievement of the LGBT agenda has not been the reversal of U.S. laws that deemed homosexual behavior illegal, but rather a sea-change in the views on homosexuality in the American culture at-large.

As was the case with all of the rotten and perverse fruit of the “sexual revolution,” this was largely accomplished by appealing to the pride of those who wanted to go their own way in the sexual realm. As C.S. Lewis noted, “pride leads to every other vice.” Homosexuality, pornography, promiscuity, and the like, are all born of the desire to ignore our Creator and write our own moral code.

It is telling that, before the LGBT agenda took root in America, pornography, promiscuity, sexually explicit displays throughout media, the “hook-up” culture, abortion (yes, abortion is a sexual issue), and so on, were being promoted and widely embraced across the U.S. Thus, no one should be surprised that once heterosexual immorality became entrenched in our culture, widespread acceptance of homosexuality would soon follow. Immorality breeds immorality.

It is also telling that, the sexual revolution that infected America flourished once those devoted to such a perverse agenda gained power. U.S. courts, politicians, academics, influential media personalities—and most tragically, even those within the church—alike all played a role in the pervasive spread of the sexual revolution. Power and pride go hand-in-hand, “For, of course, power is what Pride really enjoys,” writes Lewis. He adds,

There is nothing that makes a man feel so superior to others as being able to move them about like toy soldiers. What makes a pretty girl spread misery wherever she goes by collecting admirers? Certainly not her sexual instinct; that kind of girl is quite often sexually frigid. It is Pride. What is it that makes a political leader or a whole nation go on and on, demanding more and more? Pride again. Pride is competitive by its very nature; that is why it goes on and on.

Many were duped into believing that those promoting the LGBT agenda merely wanted to “live and let live.” However, as I’ve often noted, “live and let live” has never really been a trait of the LGBT agenda. Because of their desire to use their power to not only push their agenda, but to exact revenge upon those who stood in their way, the left’s Pride warriors have enthusiastically gone “on and on” targeting their opponents.

As Dennis Prager rightly noted, “pride is not about tolerance—it is totalitarian.” One only has to examine those targeted in the marriage debate for evidence of this. However, the “transing” of America provides most of the recent and most egregious examples of LGBT totalitarianism. (For a chronicling of these efforts, see here.)

As I noted at the beginning of this piece, few things display the pride of humanity than unabashed displays of LGBT behavior. This is because, few things are further from the truth than the legal redefinition of marriage, and the absurd notion that one can change their sex. Again, almost nothing in the realm of truth is older than what is marriage, and what is a male and what is a female. This is because, “in the beginning” God revealed these foundational truths to us.

Of course, it is hard—if not impossible—to hear God when one is filled with pride. And if we’re not hearing God, then we are likely clueless as to what is sin. “Treason doth never prosper,” wrote English poet John Harington. He asks, “What’s the reason?” He concludes, “For if it prospers, none dare call it treason.” Likewise, sin “doth” never prosper. Why? Because if it prospers, none dare call it sin. This is where we are in America, instead of calling sin what it is, and dealing with it appropriately, we celebrate it, and misery ensues.

Again, C.S. Lewis was right:

The Christians are right: it is Pride which has been the chief cause of misery in every nation and every family since the world began…Pride always means enmity—it is enmity. And not only enmity between man and man, but enmity to God.

In God you come up against something which is in every respect immeasurably superior to yourself. Unless you know God as that—and, therefore, know yourself as nothing in comparison— you do not know God at all. As long as you are proud you cannot know God. A proud man is always looking down on things and people: and, of course, as long as you are looking down, you cannot see something that is above you.

The ultimate message of Pride Month is that God—if He exists at all—is a liar, and that you can do whatever you wish in the sexual realm without consequence. This is why no Christian should have any part of it. (This is especially the case when you are telling the world about The Chosen.)

Tucker Carlson Calls Out the “Professional Christians”

In one of his monologues last week, Tucker Carlson called Merrick Garland “the weakest Attorney General” in American history. Tucker added, “Merrick Garland has presided over the most aggressive attack on civil liberties, in particular, an attack on the practice of traditional Christianity, than any living American has seen.”

Tucker’s comments came on the heels of Garland’s recent testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee. During the testimony, GOP Senators Mike Lee and Josh Hawley confronted the Attorney General on the Biden Justice Department’s heavy-handed and disproportionate attacks on American Christians, especially noting the attacks against Christians who protest abortion centers.

The Senators highlighted the FBI’s shocking raid of Mark Houck’s home, where 20 to 30 agents with “full SWAT gear, heavily armored vests, ballistic shields, helmets, [and] battering ram” terrorized Mr. Houck, his wife and their seven children simply because Mr. Houck shoved a pro-abortion extremist who was harassing his 12-year-old son.

Tucker also noted the incident involving Paul Vaughn, a pro-life father of eleven children:

In March of 2021, Paul Vaughn and 10 others were peacefully praying at an abortion clinic in Tennessee. They didn’t damage any property. They hurt no one. More than a year after they dared to do that, to pray, Merrick Garland sent the FBI to terrorize Vaughn and his 11 children at their home…

Paul Vaughn and his co-conspirators now face more than a decade in prison.

After highlighting these gross injustices against American Christians, Tucker makes what I believe is his most important point:

You have to wonder when you see a tape like that, where are so-called Christian leaders? Where’s Russell Moore and all the other breast-beating Christians as that happens, as the U.S. government cracks down on Christianity, on prayer? Silent.

The “People’s Republic of Canada” has been even more hostile to Christians. Things have gotten so bad for Christians in Canada, that in February of last year Senator Hawley reiterated his call for Canada to be placed on a special watch list of religious liberty violators. Senator Hawley’s statements were mostly due to Canada’s then ongoing treatment of Pastor Artur Pawlowski.

A day after Fox News reported on Senator Hawley’s call, in a piece entitled “Free speech and the Bible on global trial,” The Washington Times reported,

Canada’s recently unanimously passed law, C-4, prevents its citizens from spreading Biblical views on marriage and sexuality. Canadian parents, faith leaders, and citizens who hold traditional views of marriage and sexuality will now face up to 5 years of jail time for providing spiritual guidance to those seeking counseling.

As a horrific assault on civil rights, Canada’s egregious policy directly targets faith and has effectively placed targets on the backs of many of its own citizens.

Likewise, in the same monologue referenced above, Tucker Carlson declares “Canada has now become an atheist, totalitarian state with amazing speed.” Tucker adds,

And in Canada, it’s now a crime to object to sexualized drag shows for children. You’re not allowed to say a word. Late last month, a pastor in Calgary was violently thrown out of an all-ages — in other words, for children — drag queen story hour for daring to object to the sexualization of children.

And Tucker again asks the important question, “Where are all the professional Christians?” Tucker again names names:

You have to wonder that again. Where’s David French and Beth Moore and Tim Keller and all these people who are defending Christianity as actual Christians are being arrested for being Christians? Hmm. Not a word.

I’m not sure whether Tucker calling out Russell Moore, David French, Beth Moore, and Tim Keller is completely fair or not. I don’t know everything they’ve had to say on the crucial issues that Tucker points out. But I do know this: As a follower of Jesus, and as an astute observer of our media and culture, I can rarely—if ever—recall those “professional Christians” Tucker named drawing attention to themselves for speaking the truth on what are some of the most important moral issues of our time.

Additionally, as high profile as are those “professional Christians,” and given the relatively large platform with which they are blessed, we can be almost certain that if they were speaking the truth on religious liberty, the evil LGBT agenda, and the like, the godless press in America would take note. “Truth makes the Devil blush,” wrote English historian Thomas Fuller. If you make the Devil blush, he’s most likely going to come after you, and one of his favorite tools is the American media.

Tragically, Russell Moore, David French, Beth Moore, and Tim Keller are far from alone. As I’ve noted multiple times in the past several years, whether “professional Christians,” “Christian celebrities,” pastors and priests, Tucker Carlson, or everyday Christians, for far too long, far too many Christians have sat on the sidelines when it comes to the grave moral issues that demand our attention. Thus, in a matter of just a few short years, we went from a near nation-wide rejection of same-sex “marriage” to a widespread—and now often legally enforced—embrace of it.

We’ve gone from debating what is marriage to debating what is a male a what is a female. And now we are having to debate whether or not those who want to sexually groom children should be allowed to do so, and whether or not this evil should occur in our tax-payer funded libraries and schools!

As I’ve noted before, some things have been settled for all time. This is especially the case on sex and marriage. It’s past time that more Christians realized this, and started living their lives accordingly, and using their voices to say so.

Look What Surrendering on the Truth in the Sexual Realm Has Wrought

Within the last few months, multiple U.S. polling groups have reported that, for the first time, a majority of republicans now support same sex “marriage.” As Reason magazine reported in late March,

For the first time, a majority of Republicans support marriage equality for gay and lesbian couples, according to a new poll from the Public Religion Research Institute (PRRI). The PRRI poll—conducted throughout 2020—finds U.S. support for same-sex marriage now stands at 67 percent, up from 61 percent in 2017 and 36 percent in 2007. Much of the recent rise can be attributed to growing support by conservatives and independents.

In 2020, 51 percent of the Republicans polled by PRRI said they support granting legal marriage rights to same-sex couples. This is up from 47 percent in 2019 and 31 percent in 2011.

A Gallup poll from about a month ago reports similar conclusions. Gallup’s June 8 headline reads, “Record-High 70% in U.S. Support Same-Sex Marriage.” Gallup also reports, “Republicans, who have consistently been the party group least in favor of same-sex marriage, show majority support in 2021 for the first time (55%). The latest increase in support among all Americans is driven largely by changes in Republicans' views.”

Worse still, support for same-sex “marriage” has grown among those calling themselves Christians. Reporting on the same PRRI as Reason, Baptist News Global notes,

Most people of faith also support same-sex marriage, the research shows, including 81% of religiously unaffiliated Americans, 76% of non-Christian religious Americans, 75% of white Catholics and 72% of white mainline Protestants.

“Majorities of Black Protestants (57%), other Protestants of color (56%), and Hispanic Protestants (51%) support same-sex marriage, but support drops below half among white evangelical Protestants (43%).”

Baptist News Global also notes that the PRRI poll reveals that many Christians (or, likely, so-called “Christians”) are also unwilling to allow their fellow Christians to practice religious liberty while operating their businesses:

“White evangelical Protestants (46%) are the only religious group in which less than a majority opposes allowing small business to refuse service to gay and lesbian people on religious grounds,” PRRI found. “Majorities of white Catholics (60%) and white mainline Protestants (59%) oppose such refusals, as do 54% of Hispanic Protestants, 56% of Protestants who are multiracial or another race, and 70% of Black Protestants.”

Given these disturbing trends, few should be surprised that we are now debating who is a male and who is a female throughout much of the U.S. Sadly, many who seem quite disturbed by the “T” (“transgender”) aspect of the LGBT agenda have had little issue with the “L,” the “G, “ or the “B” portions of the perverse LGBT agenda. This is nothing but yet another tragic example of moral relativism.

As most who pay attention to these things well know, and as the above surveys again reveal, moral relativism is rampant in the U.S., and has been for decades now. This is especially true of matters in the sexual realm. Decades ago, as Americans debated the acceptance of homosexuality, many Christians warned of the “slippery slope” that lay ahead if acceptance of such immorality became widespread.

Sure enough, “tolerance” of homosexuality quickly turned into a legal redefinition of the oldest institution in the history of humanity. In other words, in spite of millennia of precedence, a narrow 5-4 decision by the U.S. Supreme Court (note Justice Roberts: liberals aren’t afraid of narrow decisions that radically reshape our culture!) turned marriage law in the U.S. on its head.

Even before the infamous marriage decision, Christians across the country—e.g. Jack Phillips, who is still the target of the evil LGBT thugs!—were being targeted by agents of the evil LGBT agenda. SCOTUS’s marriage decision only emboldened the militant LGBT mob. Such attacks continue to rage across the U.S., and now “transgender” absurdities abound throughout America. This has even some liberals—or at least those who regularly vote for democrats—upset.

It has been widely reported recently that multiple women who recently visited a Los Angeles spa were shocked to find a fully naked man (who was claiming to be a woman) in the females only section of the spa. What has not been widely reported is that this has happened multiple times over the past 18 months. According to the Daily Mail, a woman they refer to as “Anita” (not her real name) had a similar experience (that involved her six year-old daughter!) at the same spa in early 2020.

The Daily Mail also reports,

Anita, a registered Democrat, said she’s an LGBTQ supporter but still wants to protect her six-year-old daughter’s innocence.

Anita, a millennial daughter of Latin immigrants, says she is a Democrat voter and a supporter of the queer community, but felt compelled to speak out about the thorny issue in an exclusive interview with DailyMail.com.

Like far too many Americans, it seems that Anita likes playing along with the left; she just doesn’t like it when those decisions negatively impact her or her daughter. As a comment at the Christian Post on this matter rightly put it, “Unfortunately they also affect other people’s daughters too. She needs to realize that you either stand against evil or you stand with it, there is no middle ground.”

It’s understandable that an otherwise devoted liberal (which Anita seems to be) could be foolish enough to think that there is some happy middle ground—between the sexual moral absolutes given to us by our Creator and absolute sexual depravity—that Americans can settle into. However, no sound-thinking conservative—certainly no Christian conservative—should be duped into such thinking.

At Substack recently, conservative writer Abigail Shrier—author of IRREVERSIBLE DAMAGE: The Transgender Craze Seducing Our Daughtersrightly bemoans what she describes as “Aw Shucks Conservatism.” An example that she gives is the Senate GOP’s response to the Biden administration’s Department of Health and Human Services replacing the word “mother” with “birthing person” in budgetary documents.

Ms. Shrier writes,

The HHS deletes the word “mother” and the Republican response is to muse aloud about this—as if the HHS has done nothing more than referred to “cookies” as “biscuits.” It’s a clip worth watching because it exemplifies decades of Republican failure in culture wars that have seen Leftists wipe the floor with them.

The deletion of “mother” is just one more reflection of the government’s adoption of Gender Ideology, which insists sex is irrelevant (and sex-based rights, dispensable): you are what you say you are.

Yet, later in her otherwise strong piece, Ms. Shrier concludes,

Think what you want about abortion or same-sex marriage, but neither has anything to do with the crisis at hand—or how to repair it. Abortion is an important moral and political question—but not every other serious issue we face bears upon it or derives from it. And neither same-sex marriage nor Caitlyn Jenner poses any threat to children.

If Ms. Shrier, doesn’t believe that same-sex “marriage” and the use of “birthing person” in place of “mother” has anything to do with one another, then she, too, has been duped by “Aw Shucks Conservatism.” Likewise when it comes to same-sex “marriage” not harming children. In other words, there are some things in this world that have been settled for all time, and it’s past time for more Americans to start acting like it.
